There are certain traditional dishes that make an appearance at all your end-of-the-year holiday meals in the south. And let me tell you, there will be generations of traditions found on any southern dessert table. We take our baking seriously and family recipes are passed down through generations and, in some cases, taken to the grave.

Pies.

Pies are a dessert staple. They are easy to cut in equal size portions, so when you have a crowd it makes planning easy, they are portable and easy to take to potlucks, and the varieties are endless! There are fruit pies, custard pies, cream pies, meringue pies, no-bake pies………. sorry, Forrest Gump moment…….

As I was saying, pies are HUGE at the holidays, and a truly traditional southern holiday pie is the pecan pie. If you talk to some of the old timers around, they will explain how you only get a good crop of pecans every couple of years. I have noticed that some years they are cheaper than others, and any time I come across a good deal on them I stock up and put some in the freezer.

While surfing the internet, I had seen a couple of recipes for chocolate pecan pies and then I noticed a few that had chocolate AND bourbon. They were all similar, so I kind of took a basic pecan pie custard and tweaked it with the extra good stuff. I can’t lie, I really do like to blow my own horn, and this pie is a horn blowing opportunity. All I could do was say, “oh my god” after every bite.

You must make this for yourself.

You are going to thank me, I promise.

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup sugar

  • 1 cup corn syrup

  • 2 Tbsp. bourbon (I used Maker’s Mark)

  • 3 eggs

  • 1/3 cup melted butter

  • 2 cups chopped pecans

  • 1 ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

  • 1 (9”) pie crust

  1. Preheat oven to 375˚

  2. Whisk sugar, corn syrup, bourbon, eggs, and butter together.

  3. Fold pecans and chocolate chips into batter

  4. Pour into crust

  5. Bake for 50 minutes, turning pan half way through.

Honestly, I wasn’t going to do this blog, but this recipe must be shared. So, here is my new traditional pecan pie recipe. It won’t hurt my feelings if you claim the recipe as your own. I encourage you to make it your own family recipe.
